The small city of Shelley, ID, is located in Bingham County, 10 miles southwest of Idaho Falls along Highway 91. Home to a population of almost 4,400 people, Shelley covers less than two square miles of land on the eastern side of the Snake River, facing the Blackfoot Mountains at an elevation of 4,600 feet.
The community was established in 1904 and named for John F. Shelley, who moved to the area in 1892 and built a small store with help from the local railroad company in receiving supplies. Today, residents of Shelley live a relaxed lifestyle in a hometown atmosphere. Shelley has proudly hosted the Idaho Annual Spud Day since 1927, commemorating the harvest of Idaho’s most famous crop. The event is held on the third Saturday of September, featuring a parade, live bands, a spud-picking contest and free baked potatoes.
