The small city of Rigby, ID, serves as the seat of Jefferson County, located 15 miles northeast of Idaho Falls along Highway 20. Home to a population of roughly 4,000 people, Rigby covers 2.3 square miles of land at an elevation of about 4,850 feet.
The community was founded in 1884 by members of the Mormon Church and named after William F. Rigby, a prominent early settler and church member. The city was incorporated in 1903, and a significant majority of residents to this day are Mormon, all living under the motto, “Honoring our Heritage, Looking to the Future.” Rigby is also nicknamed “The Birthplace of Television,” seeing as inventor Philo Taylor Farnsworth drew up his first TV blueprints when he lived here, then later invented the vacuum tube display.
